About Valerie -
I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area by a single mother who bravely fought cancer for five years and passed away when I was eighteen. My husband and I married four months later and raised our family in the house where our daughter was born. Our son and daughter gifted us with five wonderful grandchildren who are all adults now, making their way through life.My husband and I moved to Lake Havasu City in fall 2017, where I’ve been visiting since 1962 BB (before bridge), and he’s been visiting since he met mein 1971.
“Art Is Life” has been my soul motto since I was a child, drawing and creating for as long as I can remember. My Nana kept me supplied with whatever I needed to create. When I was seven, I asked Nana to teach me to sew on her new Elna machine, so she set it up, handed me the manual, took me shopping for fabric, then let me learn… without her. In junior high I learned that one can use premade patterns to sew, who knew? Bob Mackey graduated from Rosemead High School and Pasadena City College, and so did I. Every year at RHSI took art and sewing classes. While my children were young, I designed and made wedding dresses and formal wear. Volunteering in my children’s classroom led me to return to college where I earned a BA and MEd for K-12, preschool and adult education in teaching, special education, counseling and administration,a more stable career that I absolutely loved. I used creativity in educating my students and in community service projects. After retiring from my education career I fully returned to artistic pursuits: drawing, painting with acrylics and watercolors, fabric and fiber arts, sewing, quilting, cross stitch, embroidery, crochet, knitting, mixed media, photography, and am learning pottery. Next step, oil painting. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I jump right into the deep end, trying difficult and intricate techniques because I don’t know my limits. Of course, I wish everyone knew, “there really are no limits.” I’m looking forward to sharing my philosophies of “Art is Life” and “No Limits” with you all. Let’s create!
